Geothermal

Geothermal heating has been used since the time of the Roman Empire. It was utilized to heat buildings and spas from the renewable energy resources of hot water and steam that exists near the Earth’s surface.

Modern implementation uses heat pumps to move heat from one place to another. Typically a heat pump will move heat from the outside of a home to the inside. Approximately 70% of the energy used in a geothermal heat pump system is renewable energy from the ground. The earth’s constant temperature is what makes geothermal heat pumps one of the most efficient, comfortable, and quiet heating and cooling technologies available today. While they may cost more to install that other heat systems, many customers pay 30%-40% lower on their energy bills. Some other benefits of Geothermal are:

  • Outside parts of the system are below ground and are protected from the weather
  • The US Environmental protection agency includes geothermal equipment in the EnergyStar program
  • Maintenance costs are often lower than traditional heating systems
